How to read a renovation quote

  • by

A good renovation quote should be readable in one sitting and let you compare it line by line against the drawing. Most of the ones we’re asked to review aren’t — not because the contractor is being dishonest, but because trade-standard quoting software isn’t built to be read by a homeowner.

What we check first

Provisional sums (a placeholder price, not a real one) hiding in the middle of the total; a “supply and fit” line that doesn’t say which fittings; and whether the quote actually matches the drawing it’s supposedly pricing, room by room.

Why an independent read is worth a day rate

We don’t take a commission from any contractor, so a Renovation Consulting day spent on your quote has no incentive pointing the wrong way — the only job is making sure the number in front of you actually buys what you think it buys.

Have a quote sitting in your inbox right now? Our assistant can walk you through what to look for, or book you a Renovation Consulting slot to have it reviewed properly.
