Three things that make a nook work
- A window, not a downlight. Daylight from the side is what makes a reading spot feel different from the rest of the room; a single warm lamp for evenings is the second light source, not the first.
- Shelving deep enough for two rows. 280–300mm lets you shelve books two deep without them falling forward, and gives you somewhere for the things that aren’t books.
- A seat with a firm edge. A window seat needs a structural edge to sit on, not just a cushion on a ledge — that’s the one detail worth involving a joiner for.
